Whether you're coming to Poruma by air or sea most guests
will initially transit through Cairns. Cairns is the gateway air and sea
port for tropical Australia and it is serviced by regular international
and domestic flights.
A Poruma Island representative is based in Cairns to facilitate guest
flight transfers and assist as required.
Although we can organise direct light aircraft charters from Cairns to
Poruma, most of our guests will choose to fly with Qantas Sunstate Airlines
on their regular flights to Horn Island and then take a light aircraft
Regular Passenger Transport or charter flight from there.
Qantas conducts a minimum of two flights daily from Cairns to Horn Island
and return. Flight time is approximately two hours. The aircraft used
are Dash 8s seating up to 50 passengers. Be sure to ask for a window seat.
The high wing design facilitates breathtaking aerial vistas of the wilderness
of Cape York Peninsula and the Great Barrier Reef.
Just before touch down on Horn Island, the aircraft crosses the spectacular
Jardine River Delta and the northernmost point of mainland Australia.
When you step off the aircraft on Horn Island there is no mistaking that
you have left mainland Australia.
Travel from Horn Island to Poruma Island is by light aircraft. The airstrip
on Poruma can handle aircraft that seat up to 20 passengers depending
on the amount of luggage carried. The 30 minute low altitude flight across
the islands and reefs of Central Torres Strait is an unforgettable scenic
experience. Turquoise reefs wrap around sandy coral cays and often turtles
and manta rays can be seen cruising the shallows. There is a large dependable
fleet of charter aircraft operating out of Horn Island to service the
8000 residents of Torres Strait. For the Islanders, light aircraft are
standard commuter transport.
