torres strait

Poruma Island is in Torres Strait between Australia and Papua New Guinea. Torres Strait links the Coral Sea with the Arafura Sea to the west and its reefs and sand cays make up the most tropical latitudes of Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The Torres Strait islands have had indigenous resident populations for many centuries. We are Australia's other indigenous people. There are 19 island communities in the Torres Strait with populations ranging from 80 to 750 residents.

The most popular activity is of course swimming and snorkelling and that can be done from the beach right outside your room. As Poruma Island is a coral cay, the reef itself is just a few metres off the beach. You will be amazed at the clarity of the water and the masses of tropical fish and other sea life so close to shore. Quality snorkelling equipment is available on site and it is included in your accommodation cost.

We think that you will find a lot to interest you on the island just with the day to day community life and activity but if you can't resist the lure of the other islands on the horizon you can take a half or full day excursion. Along the way we can troll for mackerel, sailfish or other pelagics and when we get to an island we can spear fish, go netting for fish in the traditional way or just snorkel.
